The post-op shape of the alveolar ridge is much better than after suturing, resulting in a much better implant site or dummy site. Therefore, we now promote the cost-effective and patient-friendly use of the HemCon Dressing for shaping the alveolar ridge for implants, instead of the use of high prized membranes that also require additional surgery.

1. What is the HemCon® Dental Dressing used for?
The HemCon Dental Dressing is an oral wound dressing intended as a physical barrier for temporary protection of oral mucosal tissue and to provide pain relief. The dressing is designed for use by oral surgeons and general practitioners to aid in extractions and other oral procedures.

2. How does the HemCon Dental Dressing work?
The chitosan in the HemCon Dental Dressing has a positive charge, and attracts red blood cells, which have a negative charge. The red blood cells create a seal over the wound as they are drawn into the dressing and stabilize the wound surface.

3. Since the dressing works by interacting with blood, will the dressing work on patients taking anticoagulants?
During our clinical trial, 8 patients on anticoagulants (aspirin and Coumadin) were treated with the HemCon Dressing. All dressings were effective.

4. Is the HemCon Dental Dressing safe?
The components that make up the dressing are Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) per FDA guidelines. The HemCon Dental Dressing is made from the HemCon Bandage. There have been no known adverse event reports as a result of using the HemCon Bandage since widespread distribution began in 2003. Pre-clinical studies, conducted by independent laboratories, have demonstrated good biocompatibility of the HemCon Dental Dressing. Clinical studies of the HemCon Dental Dressing, in over 100 applications, have demonstrated its safe and effective use.

5. Is there a problem using this product on people with shrimp or

shellfish allergies?
HemCon products use chitosan derived from shrimp shells*. The HemCon Dental Dressing is made from the HemCon® Bandage. There have been no known allergic reactions or adverse event reports as a result of using the HemCon Bandage since widespread distribution began in 2003.

6. Does the HemCon Dental Dressing control bleeding?
The HemCon Dental Dressing does not have a claim for hemostasis. The source material from which the dressing is made, the HemCon Bandage, is marketed for treating severely bleeding wounds and has been used to help save lives since 2003.

7. How is the dressing removed?
The HemCon Dental Dressing is designed to let the patient go home with the dressing in place. The dressing usually dissolves within 48 hours, but may take up to 7 days. At 7 days, the patient or physician should irrigate the wound to ensure removal of any residual material.

8. If I open a four- pack, but don't use them all, can I use them later?

No, sterility and efficacy will be compromised if the product is not used when opened.
